Shadow Falls

Updated: Sep 20, 2020

Another in our #HIKEINPLACE series of local hikes to get you out of the house during the #StayatHomeMN order. Try a handful of these hikes that are close to home for all you twin cities folk out there.

This is another quickie mini-hike that can be done on its own or as part of the Ford to Marshall/Lake Street Bridge route. 1/2 mile to shadow falls and back.

Start the hike where Mississippi River Boulevard does a hairpin turn just west of Cretin Avenue. This can be a nice little spot for young kids to explore, but be mindful that there is usually some mud and small stepover streams to cross. Also, parts of the trail ringing and approaching the falls are narrow, somewhat steep and offer tricky footing, so caution and keep an eye on your boogie chillun. You can approach the falls from the trail at the foot of the monument at the end of Summit. You can also continue to follow the trail for a bit as the boulevard curves to head north toward the Marshall/Lake Street bridge.

This spot is a hit with local ice climbers in the winter when the Falls freeze up.

As of this writing, there was a small lean-to trolls hut built just off the trail near the trailhead. The trolls may be eating children. Not sure.
