Minnehaha Falls to the River – about 2 miles

Updated: Sep 20, 2020

Another in our #HIKEINPLACE series of local hikes to get you out of the house during the #StayatHomeMN order. Try a handful of these hikes that are close to home for all you twin cities folk out there.

This is a walking only route – no bikes.

Check out this hidden gem of a trail from Minnehaha Falls along Minnehaha Creek to the Mississippi River and back. The path along the west (right hand) side of the creek is a little rocky and root strewn so bring decent walking shoes. It also has an elevated kitty-wampus boardwalk that can be very slippery in the rain or morning dew. Take your time. The east side has a more defined and level gravel path. It always amazes me how quickly the city seems to disappear and how much I feel connected to nature even though I'm in the middle of the city. The same goes for nearly any part of the trails alongside the river or at Fort Snelling.

The area where the creek connects to the river is a prime hangout for fish. You’ll likely see people trying to catch a few. Skip a few stones into the river at the beach. Please don't carve away into the sandstone cave a the river, and if you can, pack out a piece of trash on the trail. The wooden bridge connecting the two paths at the mouth of the creek is sometimes underwater and may be difficult to cross. Not interested in doing the whole hike? There are a couple of bridges along the way to cross the creek and make your journey shorter. You can add on a visit to the Longfellow Gardens, the 2/3 scale Longfellow house replica, The Stevens house, and the Minnehaha Train Depot. Hungry? Sea Salt restaurant is a nice little nosh in season.
