Isle of Luing: One of Scotland's Slate Islands

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

In 2008, during my maternity leave, we decided to take the family on a trip to England and Scotland for spring break. What can be more relaxing than a trip abroad with a 4-month old, a rambunctious 8-year old and a 10-year old? We met up with our dear Scottish friends, Alex and Fiona and Fiona’s mom, June, and headed to a rental house on the Isle of Luing, in western Scotland.

The Isle of Luing is one of the Slate Islands in an area called “The Firth of Lorne”. The island is 6 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and is accessed by a small ferry that runs every 30 minutes. There are about 200 residents on the island, with the largest village being Cullipool.

Cullipool is a lovely little gathering of cottages, usually painted bright white with blue trim. Our rental house was on the edge of the old quarry (now filled with water), as it was a former quarry pump house. See here for VRBO rental information. It was a charming place with beautiful views of the village and the quarry lake with mountain goats precariously perched on the other side.

The slate beaches were stunning- with dark grey sheets of stone shimmering with green and purple highlights. It was a joy to explore the island, take a few day trips, and immerse ourselves in this slice of Scottish island life.
